Methodology

Each city's prices are researched estimates of a typical roll-off rental with base weight included, built from prices publicly posted by local haulers, regional companies, and national booking sites serving that metro in 2026. Where a source gives a range, we use the midpoint. In most metros each size is the median of the sources that post it; where fewer sources exist we averaged them, and sizes with few posted prices (usually 15- and 40-yard) are estimated from the neighboring sizes. Most cities share their metro's price.

Sources don't all use the same terms: rental periods run from 5 to 14 days and included weight from 1 to 5 tons, and we don't adjust for that. These are not quotes. Tipping-fee medians use only fees published by the county, city, or operator; estimated fees are left out.

Questions

How much does a dumpster cost in 2026?

Across the 180 US cities in the index, a 20-yard dumpster costs a median of $635 for a 7-day rental with base weight included. A 10-yard runs about $530 and a 40-yard about $808.

Which state has the most expensive dumpster rentals?

Among the 13 states covered, California has the highest median 20-yard price at $840, and Delaware has the lowest at $480.

Why do dumpster prices vary by city?

Disposal fees, drive distance, labor, and local competition all play a part. Published landfill tipping fees in this index run from about $30 to $138 a ton (median about $50). Haulers pay that on every load, which shows up most in per-ton overage charges.
