Can you put water heaters in a dumpster?

Usually not

Short answer: Usually not. Several national programs refuse water heaters outright, so take them to a metal recycler instead.

Why

Dumpsters.com says hot water tanks are never accepted in its dumpsters. Bagster lists water heaters and water softeners as unacceptable. Budget Dumpster notes some landfills won't take them because of the empty space inside the tank.

What to do with them instead

Drain the tank and take it to a scrap metal recycler (steel tanks have scrap value). Or ask the installer or retailer to haul it away, or use a city bulky pickup.

What changes by location

  • state: listed as white goods in some state bans (e.g., VT)
