Can you put computers and laptops in a dumpster?

Covers: Computers, laptops, tablets and printers

Usually not

Short answer: No. Computers and printers go to e-waste recycling. Many states ban them from landfills, and laptops contain lithium batteries.

Why

The Electronics Recycling Coordination Clearinghouse lists 15 states plus DC with electronics landfill bans; most cover computers, but the devices covered differ by state (table below). Dumpsters.com prohibits computers, laptops, tablets, printers and copiers. EPA says lithium-ion batteries in the trash can start fires.

What to do with them instead

Certified electronics recycler, manufacturer mail-back, retailer take-back or a state e-cycle program. Wipe your data first.
