Can you put motor oil and oil filters in a dumpster?

No

Short answer: Never. Used oil is recyclable and banned from landfills in most states.

Why

EPA says the used oil from one oil change can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water, and to drain and recycle filters too. NERC's 2020 compendium counts 37 states with waste-oil disposal bans.

What to do with them instead

Take it in a sealed, leak-proof container to an auto parts store or service station that accepts used oil, or to HHW. Drain filters before recycling them.
